Laugh clown, laugh. How to be funny. This is Dr. Paul, author of Boomer Girls, A Boomer Woman's Guide to Men and Dating, and host of Ask Dr. Paul. How to be funny. Funny, is happening now. Funny is joke telling. Funny is the things that you least expect to happen. Funny is doing something that's spontaneous, not something planned. For example, I was at a party last Saturday night, and this man is sitting at a table, with six women, and he's laughing and talking, and apparently he asks them, and I'm right nearby, asked somebody to dance, asked another one to dance. They said no, then he got up and he started dancing with a chair. Not only did they laugh, but everybody else laughed. That was funny. Why? because it was the unexpected. Oftentimes, if you do the unexpected, you will be considered as being funny. If you go to a classy place and you think everything is cool, and everything is nice and you say something to someone, and it irritates them, say it again. Because then, guess what? It becomes funny the second time. Spontaneity is a part of funny. You don't have to think about it, just do it. If you want to think about it, think about a joke that you once heard, that was really funny, and see if you can act it out. Being funny, is a matter of catching on to something, and commenting off to the side. It's called topical humor. The people that do it well, are the comedians, and oddly enough, believe it or not, they have writers, because when theres' a writer's strike, they're not that funny, are they? So being funny is somewhat practiced, but at the same time, it has to look as if it's spontaneity, at work now. It's all about here and now. This is Dr. Paul. May your fantasies of today, be your realities of tomorrow.
