You look a mess, whether you're male or female, and you've got a date, and there you are, and there he or she is, and where do you go from there? Don't apologize. Never, never, never, never, never. Don't apologize. Use humor. Humor disarms. Be funny. Say something like, As you can see, I really got prepared for this date, and the person will either A, laugh, or B, say, Well I guess you did, and then extend it beyond there, and then reverse it, and say to that person, You know what I really like about you? You accept me for the way I am. What can they say? They don't accept you for the way they are. Of course not. Well, you're right. That's what I like about, you know a lot of people wouldn't do that, but you're special. You're there. That's it. You've made them feel good about themselves, and obviously, feel good about you, so humor makes it happen, and then reverse it, and be complimentary to the other, because they have such good taste, and they accept you regardless.
