It's important A. that you be clever and witty about how you ask a girl and B. that you do it, I think publicly or in a setting where she's going to feel special. Now it's really hard to overcome the fear of walking up to a girl in a social setting and putting yourself out there. Fear of rejection plagues all of us, almost every human. The best way to overcome this is to tell yourself that you're strong and you're worthwhile and if she says no, it's not the worse thing that's ever happened to you. You'll ask someone else, you'll overcome and you'll get to go to the prom. If you do ask and you do it correctly, that's with a smile and with confidence, she'll almost always say yes. So your best bet is just to go in there, try, do your best, come up with something clever, something you're proud of, and when you ask, do it with the thought in your head that she's going to say yes.
