Sometimes, these things can't be avoided, and if it's unavoidable, and please, don't just do it because you changed your mind. That's really tacky. You're above that. Have more dignity and class. But let's say it's a legitimate situation. Mom became ill. You gotta' go and take care of mom and dad. Daughter became ill, son, whatever, and you have to cancel the date. Make it crystal clear as to why you're canceling the date, and beyond that, let the person know look, I really want you to know that this is a real situation, and I want to do one thing and that is to reschedule. Can we do that now? And let the person answer, because if you don't let the person answer and you ask them for permission, they will feel you're being rude, so say can we reschedule this date for another time? May we do this now? Then it'll give you a little take on how they're responding to your canceling this date at the last moment. Give it a go. Not comfortable, but it is workable. This is Dr. Paul.
